Project Ongoing-

Created predominantly by Mexican- Americans in southern California following WW2,lowriders became more than a car subculture, they became a symbol of Mexican-American pride. In a 2024 NPR article it explained the racial stereotyping brought on by these types of cars in the Hispanic Community, and California's attempt to ban it "In 1958, the enactment of Section 24008 of the California Vehicle Code banned modifying cars so that the frame would be lower than the bottom of its wheel rims."

Lowriders now have the ability to connect multiple generations and span across the country as Southern Californians moved East. They brought along their culture, and their cars. In the DMV area there is a group of men and women who are passing down their love and appreciation for these builds. These cars go beyond the intricate hydraulics and meticulous paint jobs, these cars are a chance to connect over a community created thousands of miles away.
